Gateway Engineers was involved with all aspects of site planning and design for this new 14-story, 550,000 square feet complex along Fifth and Forbes Avenues in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The project, with 389 apartment units, is one of the largest apartment developments in Pittsburgh’s Oakland district. The building will feature a mix of studios, one, two, and three bedroom units, and 10,000 square feet of street-level retail on both Fifth and Forbes. A partially below grade parking structure will contain 286 parking spaces for the development.
Gateway helped secure approvals through the City Planning Department, the Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority, and the Department of Environmental Protection. The challenge on this project was being able to fit the development on the parcel. The building fronted two public roads that have a difference in elevation of over 30’. Also, access was required from multiple levels of the parking garage and we were tied to an existing city alley. These constraints required a great deal of collaboration between the design team and owner. The result was a design that met the owners’ needs and was feasible to construct.
