University of Pittsburgh – Bigelow Block Transformation

A long-time trusted partner of the University, Gateway assisted in providing a turnkey design and build solution for a significant upgrade to the grounds and plaza that wrap the front of the William Pitt Union, as well as an all-new crosswalk and traffic controls between the Union and The Cathedral of Learning. With the planning phase including vehicle traffic analysis and the preferred walking pathways of students and visitors, Gateway designed a stunning landscape and system of paver walkways that create convenient access to the buildings while improving pedestrian safety.

The new landscape that wraps the Union prominently features the bronze Pitt Panther statue, with a paver walkway surround perfect for a photo op. The new crosswalk, which connects the Union to the Cathedral of Learning Tower features architectural bollards and visually defined pedestrian pathway to harmonize pedestrian and vehicle traffic, and draws the landscape aesthetic of the Union grounds onto the street and across to the facade of the Tower.

“This streetscape and infrastructure project, will transform the block of Bigelow Boulevard between Fifth and Forbes avenues to accommodate all modes of transportation more safely and efficiently and enhance the William Pitt Union grounds to be more accessible, sustainable and accommodating for gatherings,” noted the University of Pittsburgh website.

As valued partners to the University, Gateway also provides engineering solutions  for a variety of both new construction projects, such as the Victory Heights athletic facilities  and renovations to existing structures and infrastructure.
