Mt. Lebanon to Build Veterans Memorial

Pittsburgh, PA, January 20, 2012 – The Gateway Engineers, Inc. was proud to recently donate money and services to the Mt. Lebanon Veterans Memorial. The Memorial is being built on Morgan Drive at the entrance to Mt. Lebanon Park, to recognize the contributions of World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War heroes.

A committee of residents appointed by the Mt. Lebanon Commission selected the design by the architecture firm Loysen Kreuthmeier. The memorial’s white marble stones, representing the veterans’ contributions, radiate outward into the landscape as a reminder of those who served far from home. The centerpiece of the memorial will be a single lighted figure symbolizing freedom, and the American flag. The memorial will be visible to passersby and also will offer an enclosed area with seating for quiet reflection. It will also make special note of those who gave their lives in the service of our country.

The memorial will cost $180,000. Duquesne Light contributed $220,000 (Power of Light grant) for installation of a lighted flag, flagpole and the installation of several hundred in-ground lights. The in-ground lights, symbolizing soldiers who served near and far from home, will radiate outward from an obelisk and flagpole, which are surrounded by a semicircular wall of Pennsylvania sandstone.

Gateway contributed various in-kind services. Gateway also assisted the architect in bidding the project and preparing contracts, and is overseeing the construction administration phase of the project.

Dan Gigler and Rocky Bleier are head of the Veterans Memorial Funding Committee.  Numerous fundraising events included “Brew Fests”, one 10/30/10 which raised $12,000 and one 9/17/11 which raised $18,000. “The Event”, hosted by Rocky and Jan Bleier was held 3/10/11 at Andora Restaurant and raised $50,000. Mt. Lebanon Community Endowment donated a grant of $1,000. Gateway employees personally donated to the cause and attended numerous fundraising events.
