| Gateway Surveyor has 'Sites' on New Place
Pittsburgh Business Times - by Beth Murtagh
Pick a prominent Pittsburgh project and chances are, Dick Brethauer was at its site with his tripod and level.
"You name it, I was probably involved in it," said Brethauer, a long-time surveyor at The Gateway Engineers Inc.
From the 1956 razing of 95 acres in the lower Hill District to make way for Mellon (then Civic) Arena, to Fifth Avenue Place, to shopping malls, prisons and parks, Brethauer can point to many landmarks that he played a role in constructing during his six decades in the business. At 75, he remembers details about all of them. And he has no plans to retire, especially not when he is involved with the Penguins' new arena in Uptown, and the new Gates Center for Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University.
"Dick has been there my whole life," Gateway President Ruthann Omer said. "He's has surveyed everywhere, it's phenomenal."
