Wolvarena Stadium, Woodland Hills School District

In late May 2005, Gateway’s Geotechnical Team was asked to prepare a proposal for renovations to Wolvarena Stadium, the football stadium for Woodland Hills School District.  The school district’s proposed renovations to the stadium included:  construction of a locker room/concession stand facility at field level, and another concession building with restrooms on the plateau at the top of the home bleachers; resurfacing the entire football field with an artificial turf; cleaning and restoring the concrete bleacher structures; and, converting an adjacent playfield to an asphalt parking lot.

As part of Gateway’s geotechnical evaluation, limits of the voids below the Home Bleachers, and the competency of the bleacher concrete needed to be closely examined.

Gateway brought a subcontractor onto the project team to conduct ground penetrating radar (GPR) to determine the lateral extent of the voids.  Then Gateway utilized the corresponding drilled probes to determine their depths.  The Team also evaluated the competency of the concrete through the use of materials testing.

After test borings were completed, Gateway prepared a report summarizing the findings and providing recommendations for structure foundations, floor slab, pavement, and football field subgrade preparations.  Due to site complexities, Gateway’s Geotechnical Team was involved during the design phase of the project to cite the final structure locations.  Gateway also provided construction-phase inspections to verify that subsurface conditions encountered were consistent with the test borings, and that the Team’s recommendations were properly implemented.
