Integrating G.I.S. with Handheld Technologies At The Gateway Engineers, Inc., we perform extensive field observations and data collection. Collecting data on paper maps and forms is obsolete. With advances in handheld technologies and the ESRI product, ARCPad, Gateway is able to produce more accurate mapping in a timely and cost-efficient manor. Handheld technologies greatly reduce the chances of translational errors that occur with normal field notes. These devices have the ability to combine the functions of a computer, GPS, data collector and digital camera into one device.

Problem: Information recorded onto paper maps and data collection forms is often difficult to read. Inclement weather, over-handling and even sloppy writing all contribute to the unreliability of field data being transferred to the computer for mapping. This results in lost data and inaccurate maps.
Solution: With the combined mapping and data collecting power of these technologies, the G.I.S. team has the ability to collect data on a preloaded map with customizable forms with excellent accuracy. Gateway is always fine-tuning our client's base data with the most current data collected.

Gateway currently uses handheld devices in the following areas:
  • Manhole Locations and Inspections
  • Inlet Locations and Inspections
  • Stormwater Outfall Inspections
  • Pavement Deficiencies Inspections
  • Street Centerlines
  • Utility Locations
  • Home Address Points
Maps can be made from the data collected in the field with little interpretation and manipulation. Electronic forms can be adapted to be used in any circumstance. With these handheld technologies, Gateway is able to expand the power of G.I.S. from the office to the field and supply our clients with up-to-date maps that can be viewed at the client's leisure.
