Children's Home of Pittsburgh
The Children's Home of Pittsburgh purchased a 2.9-acre property at 5324 Penn Avenue, located at the corner of Penn and S. Aiken in the Friendship neighborhood of Pittsburgh.
On this site, The Children's Home is building a three-story, 63,000 square foot building to house all three of its current programs — Adoption, Transitional Infant Care (T.I.C.®) Hospital, and Child's Way® — as well as establish a fourth program, Pediatric Transitional Care.
5324 Penn Avenue was the site of St. Joseph's Nursing Home. That building had to be torn down and the site prepared for construction of a new building. The outer brick wall was retained and will be restored because of its historical and aesthetic value. Several large, healthy trees on the site were also saved.
The new building is scheduled for completion in the spring of 2007. The project involves the demolition of several existing structures and the construction of a replacement facility to incorporate various facilities.
The Gateway Engineers, Inc. was selected as the project manager for civil site design, including: attaining the proper city approvals and production of construction documents for the facility and parking areas.
The scope of work included grading, layout, stormwater analysis and management, as well as erosion control. Site constraints included providing open and level access areas for medically fragile children.
